The Peripheral by William Gibson

About the book.

Flynne Fisher lives in a near-future America where technology has changed almost every part of everyday life. While working with an experimental piece of equipment, she discovers that what appears to be a virtual environment may actually be something much more dangerous.

Flynne becomes involved with a mysterious future that seems to have found a way to reach backwards through time. People from her own world become connected to events taking place decades later, drawing her into a conflict involving advanced technology, wealth and powerful people.

At the centre of the story are artificial bodies known as peripherals, allowing people to interact with the world remotely through highly sophisticated technology.

What to expect.

The Peripheral explores many of the ideas that make cyberpunk fascinating: advanced technology, virtual interaction, inequality, powerful organisations and the question of where the boundary between the physical and digital worlds really lies.

If you enjoy the technology, body modification and virtual experiences of Cyberpunk 2077, this is an especially interesting recommendation. The novel takes the idea of remotely experiencing another body and pushes it into a much larger story about technology, power and the future.
