Altered Carbon by Richard K. Morgan

About the book.

In the future, death is no longer necessarily permanent. Human consciousness can be stored digitally and transferred into new bodies, allowing wealthy people to live far beyond a normal human lifespan.

Former soldier Takeshi Kovacs is brought back to life in a new body and given a dangerous assignment. A wealthy man has apparently been murdered, but the victim's consciousness survived and he believes someone tried to kill him.

Kovacs is sent to investigate, uncovering a world of powerful corporations, advanced technology, violence and enormous differences between those who can afford almost unlimited life and those who cannot.

What to expect.

Altered Carbon combines hard-edged detective fiction with a dark cyberpunk future. Expect futuristic cities, corporations, advanced technology, body modification, violence and questions about what it really means to be human.

If you enjoyed the themes of identity, cybernetic technology and corporate power in Cyberpunk 2077, this is a particularly strong match. The novel takes those ideas further by asking what happens when even your body is no longer necessarily your own.
